You need to be very thorough with the instructions to use a lever chain hoist properly and safely. While actually operating the hoist is fairly simple, there’s actually a bit more to it.
We will be going through how to go about using a lever chain hoist, as well as how to inspect it before using it, which is very important for your safety.
Inspecting the Hoist
Before starting to use a lever chain hoist, you need to inspect it thoroughly. And you need to do this every time you want to use the hoist.
If you find any deforming of parts, those parts would need to be replaced. Some of the parts that are more prone to deformation, and hence need to be inspected more frequently, include bolts, load chain, hooks (both top and bottom), safety latch, lever outside and chain stopper.
Some of the parts that don’t need to be inspected as frequently, but still need occasional inspection, include ratchets, free wheel spring, ratchet wheel, gears, brake disk and more. You would need to disassemble the unit in order to inspect these parts.
Finally, you need to pay special attention to the brake disk, making sure none of its sides are oily or dirty.
Operating the Hoist
Now that you’re aware of the “pre-use” inspection, let us talk about how to operate a lever chain hoist correctly. As mentioned earlier, this is a fairly simple process.
While lifting up, all you need to do is switch the selector switch into the “Up” mode, and pull the lever up and down. You do this until the load is ready to be pulled down.
To pull it down, you need to switch the selector switch back to the position it was in before, and then switch it back to the “Down” mode. You then need to keep pulling the lever back towards you, and the load would start moving downwards.
If you’re using the free chain, you need to make sure the selector switch or the direction indicator is in the neutral mode or the center. Then, you need to turn the wheel anti-clockwise, till it reaches at least 90 degree from where it started.
Many workshops rely heavily on a chain hoist for most of their tasks. Hence, things may come to a standstill for them if it’s not working properly, or worse yet, stops working altogether.
This makes it important for you to be aware of some common issues you may run into while operating the hoist and learn how to fix them. We will be taking a look at some of them as well as talk about how to troubleshoot them.
One of the possible causes for this may be the emergency stop button being on, or the main switch being shut off. If that’s not the cause, however, you would want to check the fuse. If it’s blown, it may need to be replaced.
Sometimes, the hoist may stop working properly, or not work at all, when it gets overheated. In such a case, simply allowing it to cool down may work best.
However, if it turns out that neither of these things have caused your hoist to stop working, then the problem would likely be the pendant pin not being pushed out, or some of the screws may need a bit of tightening.
A common cause for this may simply be that you have overloaded the hoist. However, if that’s not the case, you should be checking the slip clutch. If it’s damaged in any way or not in the right position, you need to replace or readjust it.
If you’re sure about these things not being an issue, then you would want to make sure the brake is releasing properly. If it’s not, you need to check the gap setting, resistance level of the brake coil and the rectifier output voltage.
This might have something to do with the brake lining. This is especially in case the load is drifting more than 4 inches.
If it’s indeed the case, the brake lining may need replacing. However, sometimes, the brake lining may be working fine but it may just be that the air gap may have end up being a bit too wide. Simply readjusting it would fix the problem.
A chain hoist is believed to an ideal equipment when it comes to lifting heavy loads efficiently. However, it’s not the safest equipment out there.
You need to follow some safety measures to prevent the risk of an accident or serious damage. Here’s some important tips that may help you.
A Thorough Check Before Operating
It’s absolutely necessary to make sure the hoist is working properly before you start operating it. If you find something that doesn’t seem right, don’t start using it until it has been fixed.
The breaks and other important controls need more attention. Similarly, if any of the parts seem to have got damaged in some way, repair or replace it before proceeding. Overlooking these factors and operating the hoist is like an accident waiting to happen.
Take All the Safety Precautions
While attaching the load to the hoist, make sure it’s attached securely. It should also be in level.
If the load doesn’t reflect good balance, it may end up being a possible cause of an accident. So lower the load until it hangs properly and there is good balance.
Another important safety precaution is to always put the load in the middle, and not stand in the way of the hoist – whether it’s in motion or not. If there are also other people around you, make them follow the same.
Also do not ride on the hoist and don’t overload it. Sometimes it may handle a bit extra load than its maximum capacity, but some other times it may not be able to cope with it.
Handling the Chain and Other Parts
Make sure there are no obstructions in the chain. It may prevent it from operating smoothly. Also, avoid using the chain at its maximum tension level. It too can be a cause of accident.
There are some parts in the hoist system that operate on electricity. Make sure you don’t get too near to them – if you end up touching any of them you may get electrocuted.
Every electric hoist does come with a certain level of risk, to both the person operating it as well as the place it’s installed in. However, this risk can quickly get to a dangerously high level if some of the basic instructions, precautions and safety measures are not followed.
With that said, here are some important tips to operate an electric hoist safely.
#1 Getting a Remote
While you usually wouldn’t consider getting a remote if you’re only lifting around a couple thousand pounds, it’s still recommended to get one just to be on the safe side. This is because the nearer you’re to the hoist, the greater is the risk of a personal injury.
And while you may try to take all the safety measures and precautions, sometimes, you may forget to do something that may compromise your safety. This is where developing a habit of standing as far from the hoist as possible may turn out to be crucial – for which you need to get a remote.
#2 Avoid Using the Hoist to Its Maximum Capacity
Something that can greatly improve your safety while operating an electric hoist is being aware of the amount of weight being lifted. You would never want to use the hoist to its maximum capacity, especially not on a regular basis.
Ideally, if you tend to lift between 1 to 10 tons, you would want the hoist to come with a maximum capacity of at least 15 tons. Some might say that it’s a bit paranoid, but you actually do increase the risk of something going wrong if you use the hoist at its maximum capacity most times.
#3 Get Some Safety Devices
There seems to be a variety of safety devices available to help you operate an electric hoist considerably more safely. Some of the better options include a hook latch, load brakes, limit switch, shock protection and more. Similarly, there’s also a strapping system which goes a long way in improving the safety while lifting.
It works as a backup system in case the chains break while the hoist is loaded with a lot of weight.
#4 Take the Necessary Precautions
One of the simplest ways to avoid the chances of a mishap is taking all the precautions you can while operating the hoist. They include installing the hoist in a safe location, having some open space around it in case you need to escape quickly, not using the hoist in an explosive atmosphere, making sure everything is in place before every lifting operation and so on.
An electric hoist is one of the most useful additions to any workspace. It offers a whole new level of versatility, thanks to the different styles it comes in and the wide range of tasks it can handle.
However, there a few tips that would help you use it more safely and effectively, allowing you to get more out of it. So without further ado, let’s go through them.

The reason it can make all the difference in the world when it comes to your safety is that if the chains break for some reason, you probably won’t have enough time to get out of the way, let alone get the object back to the ground.
A strapping system will prevent this from happening, as it will help you buy some time from getting out of harm’s way and even getting the object back to the ground.
Tip 3: Go for Strong Cables
This is another important factor many hoist owners fail to realize. However, the cables are actually one of the most important parts of your hoist system.
Some hoists also come with cables, but it’s recommended to get your own, stronger ones. It’s not something you should ever compromise on as your hoist is only as good as the cables.
An important tip to keep in mind here is that the cables are rated for the weight that the hoist system will be lifting, so make sure you get them accordingly.
Tip 4: Distribute the Weight Evenly
It helps to have your hoist perfectly leveled. However, it’s more important to make sure that the object you’re putting on it is also level, and the weight distributed evenly.
This prevents the object from tilting, eliminating the possibility of it falling off the hoist.
Tip 5: Using Your Hoist More Effectively
An electric hoist can do a wide range of tasks, and lift pretty much any type of object. However, it pays to use it in the most effective way possible to ensure a higher level of safety and improve its durability in the long run.
Using joists and trucking beds is a great way to making it easier for your hoist to handle all the weight, as it would reduce the distance it would have to cover while lifting the objects.
An electric hoist is useful in a variety of ways. Of course, it comes in handy for pretty much every task that involves lifting heavy stuff.
However, if you’re a do-it-yourseler, it can be challenging to figure out how to install it the right way. So here’s a step by step guide of mounting an electric hoist in your garage.
Step 1: Figure Out the Location
The most important factor is to simply determine where exactly you should be installing the electric hoist. Something to keep in mind here is that the load the hoist is going to handle is also going to be something that will be put on the truss system.
Usually, a truss system can handle up to 400 pounds. But to be able to use it to its maximum capacity, you need to make sure that the load is being placed in a way that the weight is evenly distributed and not focused on a particular area where the hoist will be installed.
Putting the hoist in the middle of the truss system is probably going to be your best bet here.
Step 2: Adding Load Support
Once you’re done determining where you will be placing the hoist, you need to add some load support. You can do this by adding 2x6 joists to the truss system.
They should be placed in between the trusses to make the system more stable. As far as their installation is concerned, it’s going to be very easy if you have an open ceiling.
If you do not, however, you would need to cut a hole that covers three trusses. It would usually need to be 2 feet wide.
Then, you can cut the joists and attach them in a way that they are exactly in between the trusses, with the center trusses having one on each side.
Step 3: Attaching Cross Joists
You will also need to install joists at the end of the trusses where you attached the other joists. However, they will be placed along the side of those trusses, and would need to be cut to a two foot length.
Step 4: Attaching the Hoist to the Joists
While the primary reason of attaching joists is to provide additional load support to the system, it also allows the hoist to be installed more securely.
The hoist comes with a mounting bracket. You need to use it and mark holes for screwing in the bolts. Finally, you will need to drill straight through, with the brackets going on the other side of the joists. Also, use the holes you marked to screw in the bolts.
Step 5: Install the Hoist
Once everything is in place, you need to put the hoist in the right position and use the bolts to secure it to the system.
